10 Minute Pace Playlist: Grunge Edition

I have a goal to one day run a 5K in less than 30 minutes.  My current PR is 33:06 and my most recent race time was 37:48.  I obviously have some work to do!  I often have a problem while running with losing my focus.  My mind wanders and my pace starts dropping about a mile into the race.  I run with my iPhone and use it as my music source so I try to keep it loaded with upbeat music.
Lately I’ve been using Spotify while running.  I can create a playlist on my laptop and then just click and listen while I’m running.  The only downside to this is that the free mobile Spotify site will not play the songs in the order I have placed them.  You can only listen to the songs shuffled.  No biggie.  I just make sure that every song on my list is something that will motivate me!

If I’m going to ever run a sub-30 minute 5K then I am going to have to get my pace at less than a 10 minute mile.  I’m not there yet but on a really good day with perfect conditions I can crank out around a 10:00 minute mile.  To help me stay focused and on pace I created a playlist of songs averaging 150 beats per minute.  This will result in roughly a 10 minute mile if you run to the beat of the music.

I used to find songs that fit the pace I needed and I also used MetronomeOnline to see which of my favorite songs were the right beats per minute.  And thus I created the 10 Minute Pace Playlist:  Grunge Edition.  I’m a Generation X-er, a teenage product of the 90’s.  This list features some of my very favorite songs from one of my favorite eras.  Smashing Pumpkins?  Pearl Jam?  Weezer?  Yes, yes and yes!
Most of the these songs meet the 10 minute per mile pace criteria although I put a few in there that are a little faster paced to help me pick it up a little bit.

Keep checking back for more playlists!  I have several I am working on and I’ll be posting different paced songs soon as well (a 8 minute mile, maybe?  Ha, ha, ha, ha!).  Follow my Pinterest board so you don’t miss any of them!

  1. You can’t search them on Spotify by bpm but you can on! I love Spotify! It saves me money on downloads and as long as I have a good connection I can listen anywhere. And it saves me storage space on my iPhone. I do have some back up songs on my iPhone just in case Spotify won’t work for some reason.
