I am not a big country music fan and I honestly did not even know who Jimmy Wayne was when I chose this book as my next book to review from BookLook Bloggers. I was drawn to it when I read the description and once I received the book and started it I couldn’t put it down. I finished the 400+ page book in just under 48 hours!
Jimmy had a few hits on the Billboard charts several years ago. Walk to Beautiful is the story of his life–and it is quite a story! I shook my head in disbelief several times (like the time he was nine and someone was murdered with an ax in front of him) and I started to wonder if all this was really true. When I researched the book online I found that his co-author said the same thing. However, everything in his book has been corroborated with others.
Jimmy gives a vivid and detailed description of his childhood where he suffered physical, emotional and even sexual abuse. After years of dealing with this abuse, neglect, and abandonment by his mother, Jimmy’s life was turned completely around when an elderly Christian couple offered to let him live with them. He says, “They changed every cell in my body.” What is amazing about his story is the fact that he turned out to be such a fine, upstanding man. He had every reason to be angry and bitter but instead he turned to Jesus.
Several years ago he walked from Tennessee to Arizona to raise awareness for foster kids and more specifically the ones who “age out” of the system every year. He writes about his motivation, his determination and his heart for foster children.
This was a well written, heartbreaking but inspirational book. If you enjoy biographies or you are a fan of Jimmy Wayne you will enjoy Walk to Beautiful.
