I happened to find the book Who’s The New Kid?: How an Ordinary Mom Helped Her Daughter Overcome Childhood Obesity–and How You Can Too by Heidi Bond while browsing the new non-fiction section of the library last week. I checked it out and had read the entire book by 10pm that night. I was truly captivated by this mom’s story and I couldn’t wait to share my review!
Thankfully I don’t have a child who is struggling with her weight. However, the issue of childhood obesity is very near and dear to me. I have struggled my entire life with my weight and it breaks my heart to see the prevalence of obesity among children rising. Parents these days have to be vigilant about teaching their children healthy habits.
This book tells the story of Breanna Bond who weighed 186 pounds at nine years old. Her parents knew something had to be done but when they asked for help (from their pediatrician) they did not receive it. “She’ll grow into her weight” they were told. Well Breanna kept gaining weight–at a rate of about twenty pounds a year. She was already morbidly obese before she was even a teenager.
After years of feeling stuck and trying and failing to help her lose weight her mother Heidi finally got serious and became, as she calls herself, Military Mom. She accepted responsibility for her daughter’s weight–from not encouraging her to eat healthy foods as a toddler to letting her dictate what activities she would do at age five–and became determined to reverse the damage and to encourage new healthy habits in her children. No more excuses. No more looking back.
Being overweight is 100 percent reversible. No child was made to be overweight.
It all started with a 3.4 mile walk. Heidi soon found that it was not going to be an easy road. Her daughter hated it at first but eventually the exercise, coupled with a healthy, low sugar and healthy diet, helped Breanna to lose weight. She eventually lost over 70 pounds and became an athlete! You may have seen her in In Touch, on Good Morning America or even on The Biggest Loser. You can read more about Breanna on her website.
In addition to telling her story, the book also includes a 40 day, kid friendly nutrition and exercise plan. The foods are simple and the plan is easy to follow. It’s a great way to get started on a healthy weight loss plan with your child.
